Of course, I did not have the time nor the patience to get through every single game that came out this year. That means some notable releases like Resident Evil 2, Gears 5 , and DualShockers ' Game of the Year Judgment did not make my list. Some great games were also just barely beat out, but I'd still recommend Ape Out, Baba is You, Samurai Shodown and Mortal Kombat 11 if you are looking for a good time. Without further ado, here are my 10 favorite games of 2

Controlling combat is the familiar button mashing affair that gamers are used to with Fable . Battles normally boil down to repeatedly hitting the X button (melee attack) with the occasional magic spell thrown in for good measure. The combat can get boring quickly, but every now and then the hero pulls out a fancy finishing move that makes it worth not checking out during battle. The problem is the finishing moves are completely random and players can do the same combat actions 10 times yet only see the finishing move o

imageGameplay itself is a nice blend of action elements with those traditional to an RPG. On the offense, a melee weapon, long range weapon and magical will powers are always available, each assigned to a different face button. For defense, numerous gear combinations are available to ensure you’ll always be protected in the heat of battle. Plus you can block and roll. Enemies tend to rush you and offer quite a challenge for those unfamiliar with the proper strategies. Grinding isn’t a common occurrence, but going into battle well stocked with items is always necessary. While it’s not the deepest system, it’s still arguably the best one in the Fable series and remains enjoyable today.

We've all seen action movies where the hero shows up just in time to prevent nuclear bombs being dropped on the United States. Well, the Fallout series is set in a world where that hero never showed up. What makes the Fallout games particularly good source material for a movie adaptation isn't so much the story, but the setting. When the dust clears, America is a blasted wasteland occupied by small pockets of life including bandits, monsters, slavers, weird cults, military factions like the Enclave and the Brotherhood of Steel, and a whole lot of regular people just trying to scratch a living. For the right filmmaker, this world could be the perfect backdrop for an original story set in the Fallout unive

The game begins by taking control of either the son or daughter of the hero from Fable 2 , the prince or princess of the fantasy kingdom of Albion. Choosing to be the prince means the character's father was the hero, while choosing the princess means it was the character's mother. The game takes place 50 years after the events of Fable 2. The industrial revolution has swept across the land, and things in Albion have changed drastically. The protagonist's brother is currently the king, but he's ruling more like a tyrant. From there, destiny requires leaving the safety of the castle (with a faithful dog of course), becoming a hero, garnering the support of the people, overthrowing the oppressive brother/king and becoming the ruler of Albion. How this is gone about is up to the player to dec

Whatever happened to Fable ? Despite being one of the highest profile, exclusive franchises on the Xbox, after the release of Fable 3 , Microsoft didn't seem to know what to do with the franchise. With a nearly-forgotten experiment with the Kinect, Fable: Journeys , and some Xbox Live Arcade games based on the minigames in the franchise, there hasn't been a commitment to a mainline Fable game in nearly a decade. With the recent closure of Fable developer Lionhead Games, one of the dearly departed studios from the late-period PC market of the 90s and made up of many castoffs from Theme Hospital and Dungeon Keeper Bullfrog, and the even more recent cancellation of the multiplayer-focused Fable: Legends , there seemed to be no hope for a new installment in what was once the most exciting RPG franchise e

That leads us to one big candidate: Playground Adventure Games Beginner Guide, makers of the recently released and well-received Xbox-exclusive Forza Horizon , who have been known to be working on an open-world RPG for Microsoft for some time. Job postings by Playground indicate they are looking for artists and programmers with experience in these fields and Horizons was itself an open world game, just with cars instead of swords and hor

I'm not much of a creator, but I've had a ton of fun seeing what everyone's made in Super Mario Maker 2. Whether I'm rating levels for StephenPlays' Morning Mario, getting random grab bags of levels in multiplayer or endless mode, or just browsing for myself, I am always surprised by the masterpieces and monstrosities that people can come up with if you give them the right to

Just like the Trials series, half of the fun is in mastering the course, and a few unique objectives across the game's sixteen tracks and four mountains add to its replayability. Lonely Mountains: Downhill can still be quite difficult and somewhat irritating at points when you just can't get a part of the course down, but overall Lonely Mountains: Downhill is a soothing and relaxing game to play if you aren't doing anything else or want to do something more than just listen to John Mulaney, Ben Hanson, or Andrew Y
